Mallard Duck (Anas platyrhynchos)

There are hundreds of the famous Mallard Duck (Gluvara in Serbian) on the Sava River near our house. I took a picture of this female perched out of the water.

The Mallard is supposed to be the ancestor of all domestic ducks. It is one of the most recognizable and wide spread ducks in the world. You can clearly see the purple “speculum” that both male and females have of the species.

Below is a photo of a male mallard taken at Sava River on October 19, 2008.
