This plant announces spring in Belgrade! They are in parks and gardens all throughout the city including our school and my yard. They are popularly planted in gardens because they are hardy and have a bright early bloom in spring.

Forsythia is a genus of 11 species of the Olive plant family. They are mostly small shrubs native to Asia, but one species is appropriately native to the Balkans. The bushes we see in city are probably a cultivated hybrid species. They are named after a Scottish botanist who helped found the Royal Horticultural Society.

  1. Hi!
I live in Kragujevac, and I was wondering if you knew if Forsythia is commonly sold in Serbia? Is it called Forsythia here?

I’m from Canada, and moved here a couple of years ago, and have difficulty finding plants sometimes. 🙂

    Thanks for any help.

    • Not sure if it is sold. It is probably easy to take a cutting from a plant in one of the many parks here and see if you can grow some yourself.
