This mushroom species is from the Russula genus. There are over 750 different species of Russula, and individual identification is difficult. the Russula are known for their bright colors, several of them are red as this specimen. They are also know for their gills underneath the cap. A couple of the species are edible, but most are poisonous, hence many people will not eat any from the genus. This specimen was photographed in the Rajac region in September of 2009.
