Last Sunday morning I spotted this Great Crested Grebe at the swimming beach on Ada Ciganlija, the island park in Belgrade. It was quiet and at first I thought it was a cormorant, but noticed the big crest. The Great Crested Grebe is known for its dramatic mating rituals. The orange feathers on the face of the bird frill out like a mane during the courtship dance.
It is found in vegetated fresh water areas throughout Europe and Asia. In Serbian, it is known as Ćubasti gnjurac.
