Ground Beetle (Carabus granulatus)

My son Oliver is studying “minibeasts” at school so we are looking for insects this spring. He found this ground beetle under the bark of a large stump in our yard. This is one of the most common ground beetles in Europe. It has been introduced North America. They range in color from black to green and are predators.

Daniel Marlos from “” helped me with the identification.

Hi Bill,
We believe we have relatively quickly identified your Ground Beetle as
Carabus granulatus, a species found throughout Europe and west into the northern parts of Asia.  We also learned the species was introduced to North America.  You can compare your photo to this example on the Ground Beetles of Ireland webpage.
