I photographed the European Wasp in Timisoara, Romania on Saturday. The wasp was flying near the edge of a pond at the Banat Village Museum.

It is larger than the wasps we have in North America. They are not as aggressive as well, but if disturbed near their nest, they do give a painful sting that will cause swelling. Their nests are located in hollows near the ground. I saw a nest at our school last year in between two rocks on the garden terrace.

The word for wasp in Serbian is osa or zolja.
