Praying Mantis

Yesterday we found this praying mantis on the soccer field at our school. There are over 2,400 species of mantises so I couldn’t tell you which one this particular specimen is. It may be Tenodera aridifolia, the Giant Japanese Mantis and one of the people at the game commented that “Oh, that is a small one” so I suspect that perhaps this is it. They are beautifully camouflaged, looking like a live green leaf, with veins and edges like a real leaf.

It was tame and I was able to allow it to crawl up my arm and photograph it. The compound eyes are amazing and the modified front legs do look fierce.
