Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter

Update – I took another photo of the conjunction at sunset, from the roof of the parking lot of CBS Studios on July 4th, 2015.

I took this photo in the Universal Studios Hollywood parking lot tonight. The conjunction of Venus and Jupiter was very prominent in the sky. Owen and I noticed it Sunday night when we were coming back from the batting cages back in Japan.

A conjunction is when two planets (or the moon or starts) appear to be close together in the sky. They are actually very far apart. Venus is approximately 50 million miles away from earth and Jupiter is 560 million miles away. As Venus revolves around the sun quicker than Jupiter, it will begin to appear to pull away from Jupiter. Conjunctions are quite common and occur every few months. I usually noticed conjunctions of the moon with a planet.
