Sayaca Tanager

This is one of the traditional sounds and colors of Santa Cruz, the beloved Sayubu (Thraupis sayaca) or Sayaca Tanager. This is one of the most common urban birds in this part of South America. It has an omnivorous diet and prefers the open areas with some cover of cities in the southern cone. It is very similar to the Blue-grey tanager, the most common tanager of Latin America, but found further north. There are 240 different species of Tanagers, exclusively in the Americas, and 9 species of the genus Thraupis. They make up 12% of the neotropic ave fauna.
