Black Kites

There were several black kites (Milvus migrans) soaring above the beaches today at Miya Jima (Miya Island) in Hiroshima Bay. They were swooping down to the beaches and tourist areas to hunt and scavenge. They are quite large and typically raptor looking.

The black kite has a massive range from sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, India, Australia, Russia, China and Japan. The kite in the photo below I believe has a crab in its talons and beak.
